Pendle

Situated in rural Lancashire, the region of Pendle with its quaint villages hides a dark past. Its name is forever linked to the infamous Pendle Witch Trials of 1612 among the most famous and best recorded witch trials in English history. A guided tour of the area will enhance your students' understanding to the historical context of withcraze which broke out in the 16th and 17th centuries and offer a perspective both on the hysteria that developed and how the justice system worked in 17th century England.

The second part of the tour will take you to Lancaster Castle, located roughly 30 miles from Pendle. It was here that the defendants from Pendle, alongside the so-called Samlesbury Witches and others were also tried in August 1612. Those who were convicted were executed, by public hanging, on 20th August, 1612
