School Trips & Tours to the Bay of Naples

Home to one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, the Bay of Naples is famed for both its outstanding natural beauty and epic history. Situated on the south-western coast of Italy, the bay is flanked by the beautiful cities of Naples and Sorrento. Also the location of one of only a few of Europe’s only active volcanos the Bay of Naples has a diverse geography as well as a dramatic past. We offer the following GCSE and A level school trips to the Bay of Naples.

An incredible opportunity for students to learn about the formation and eruptions of this spectacular volcano, Mount Vesuvius is one of the most exciting study visits on the Bay of Naples. Famed for its catastrophic eruption in 79 AD which destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the notoriously volatile volcano has created some key moments in history. As well as seeing Mount Vesuvius up close, you can also take in the breath-taking panoramic views from near the summit.

Pompeii

Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD resulted in the destruction of the Ancient-Roman city of Pompeii, burying the city in 4-6 metres of pumice and volcanic ash. Thousands of years later, the site was uncovered, and due to the lack of moisture and air, the artefacts were preserved in extraordinary detail. You can now walk through the streets of the ancient city which comprises shops, houses, temples and even an amphitheatre, offering an unparalleled insight into the lives of the city’s residents who lived almost 2000 years ago.

Amalfi Coast

Regarded as one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the Mediterranean, the area has even been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its picturesque landscape. Featuring dramatic mountains, rustic Italian towns and numerous cultural hotspots all bordered by the glittering Mediterranean, the area is the perfect place to sample the local cuisine and learn about the ever-changing coastline.

Bay of Naples Accommodation

When visiting this region, staying in or close to the town of Sorrento is a massive bonus. A picturesque town which is popular with tourists, Sorrento is easily explored on foot and its port is just a few minutes away for groups wanting to visit Capri. We offer a selection of 3* properties in central Sorrento, and for those groups wanting a quieter location, we also provide properties along the nearby coastline, still within easy reach of Sorrento.

Local Cuisine

Renowned for its delicious, Mediterranean cuisine, Naples is an easy contender for producing some of the best food in Italy. Neapolitan dishes famously feature fresh seafood, sweet tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella, but there’s plenty of great pasta and pizza dishes for those looking for something a little more familiar.

Our top choices of foods to try in Naples are pizza alla napoletana, one of the city’s most famous dishes, this pizza is classically topped with tomatoes and mozzarella; cuppetiello, an Italian street food which comprises of an assortment of fried pizza dough, potato croquettes and fried mozzarella bites; and polpette, which are meatballs served in a tomato sauce. If you’re not full after all that, sampling a few scoops of Naples’ famous gelato is a must!

Hidden Gems

Pertosa Caves

Hidden away on the eastern side of the Alburni mountains is a limestone, or karst, cave system which is full of both water and a vast array of geological features. A great opportunity to learn about the cave’s formation while exploring its numerous caverns, the caves continue for thousands of metres into the heart of the mountains.

Ruins of Herculaneum

Often overshadowed by its greater sister city Pompeii, Herculaneum was also destroyed by Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD. Just like Pompeii, this Ancient-Roman city has been fantastically preserved, with buildings, household objects and skeletons all still visible. Herculaneum was a wealthier city than Pompeii, boasting a high number of lavish buildings to admire as you wander through.
