Iceland: The ultimate destination for Geography students

20 October 2021

Why take your students to Iceland?

As Geography teachers know, Iceland is a hub of 'making it real' learning for young people, with a deep relevance to the growing conversation around the environment and climate change.

As a Nordic island nation residing in the North Atlantic, Iceland is famed for its dramatic volcanic landscapes and array of natural wonders. Due to its vigorous geothermal activity and unusual climate, Iceland boasts a diverse geography. With key locations including the Reykjanes Peninsula, the Kerid Volcanic Crater, Þingvellir National Park, The Geysir Geothermal Park, Gullfoss, Solheimmajokull and Eyjafjallajokull, the country is a literal hotbed of natural wonder.

Imagine taking your students to experience cascading waterfalls, geothermal pools, geysers, glaciers, and the Northern Lights. In one country they could witness first-hand the impact of climate change on glaciation, alongside volcanic lunar landscapes.

The ultimate study location for budding geographers, explorers,  adventurous scientists and curious minds; an Iceland school trip is unlike any other.

Bespoke Educational Resources

This is exactly why Iceland has been chosen as the destination for the first of WST’s bespoke educational resources that will engage and support our 4 and 5-day Iceland Tours.

These resources has been carefully planned to support pre and post tour activity. They highlight clear teaching and learning objectives for students aged 14 to 16, complementing the specification for GCSE Geography, alongside alignment to a number of the UNSDGs and key characteristics associated with the development of social and emotional life skills.

These tours and related resources also have several cross-curricular links, most notably with GCSE Science. This provides an opportunity to develop students’ cultural capital, engaging them with a variety of interests, while applying what they learn in the classroom to the world around them.

The logic behind the project

Through ongoing dialogue with teachers we recognise education professionals are seeking authentic resources and assets to extend the educational value of their tour and complement experiential learning. As a result, we partnered with practising geography teachers with first hand experience of tours to Iceland to create a series of bespoke educational resources.

Why WST?

A four-time winner of Best School Tour Operator, WST offers authentic contextualised experiential learning experiences. Our supporting educational offer has been created in association with educational professionals, who have a clear understanding of the challenges associated with organising beyond the classroom experiences for their students.
